The Prime Minister familiarizes himself with the activities of the new supercomputer center at YSU

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited Yerevan State University and got acquainted with the activities of the new supercomputer center during the tour. The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Vice President of the National Assembly, Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan, Hakob Arshakyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, Minister of High-Tech Industry Mkhitar Hayrapetyan.

YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan presented the work carried out towards the creation of the center. It was noted that within the framework of the capital measure of the Committee of Higher Education and Science of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia to re-equip scientific research organizations with modern valuable equipment and create centers for joint use of scientific equipment, 3.4 billion drams were allocated for the creation of a new supercomputer center at Yerevan State University in 2024.

A supercomputer equipped with 64 NVIDIA H100 GPUs was also acquired. In order to ensure the full operation and more effective use of the latter, an additional 1.17 billion drams were allocated in 2025 to increase the competitiveness of the data processing center formed to ensure its full operation and more effective use. After almost two years of preparatory and organizational work, the process of installing and testing the supercomputer (“stress test”) was completed.

It was emphasized that this scientific infrastructure, which has exceptional computing power and is intended for shared use, is of key importance for Armenia's capacity building in the fields of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, stimulating the development of scientific research, the implementation of innovative programs, and the modernization of educational processes.

Prime Minister Pashinyan was informed that the target users of the supercomputer will be research groups engaged in machine learning and artificial intelligence. It will also be available to scientific groups in related fields, such as researchers in computational physics, materials science, computational chemistry, healthcare and biomedical research, climate modeling, robotics, and autonomous systems, to solve specific scientific problems, as well as for educational purposes.

In the context of the large-scale reforms of the Government of the Republic of Armenia in the field of science, state funding for the sector has increased by about threefold since 2018.

The Prime Minister was also informed about the renovation works of the lobby of the Sarkis and Marie Izmirlian Library of Yerevan State University, in particular, the lobby of the first floor of the library is being renovated, the lighting system is being modernized, and a glass roof is being installed, creating an innovative environment.
