Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attended the opening ceremony of Yerevan’s historical “Red Bridge” monument in the Kentron administrative district of Yerevan. The event was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Armenia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Vassilis Maragos, and others.

The opening of Yerevan’s historical Red Bridge also concluded the “European Heritage Days” program, which was implemented within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia and the EU.

The works on strengthening, repairing and restoring the monument were carried out with the funding of benefactor Yuri Afrikyan, within the framework of the memorandum signed between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia and the benefactor in 2022.

The "Red Bridge" is a monument of republican significance, located on the Hrazdan River. It is the oldest preserved bridge in Yerevan and is considered one of the largest engineering structures of medieval Armenia: it is 11 m high, 80 m long, and 6.5 m wide. Connecting the banks of the Hrazdan Gorge, the bridge provided road communication from the Yerevan Fortress to the Ararat Valley. The bridge is a structure of the 10th-13th centuries.

Reconstruction and major renovation works were carried out in the 1830s and 1960s, during which basalt retaining walls were added to both ends of the bridge for reinforcement purposes. Later, in the 1980s, the restoration works were left unfinished. Before the full restoration, only the southern large arch and the northern span of the bridge were preserved. The bridge was, in fact, destroyed and in urgent need of restoration.
